One of the top google searches today is “secondary drowning”. Wikipedia defines it as follows: “Secondary drowning is death due to chemical or biological changes in the lungs after a near drowning incident”. This can occur when a person swallows or chokes on water and a small amount goes into the lungs. The water acts as an irritant and the lungs produce fluid in response which can cause drowning up to 72 hours after the water is inhaled. A 10 year old boy died over the weekend from secondary drowning. Since it’s summer and swimming season for most children, I thought it important to mention this phenomenon so parents can be more aware. If you notice your child inhales a lot of water, don’t be afraid to seek medical attention.
Secondary Drowning or Dry Drowning
