4,800 families are seeking compensation in a series of federal hearings regarding the link between Vaccines and Autism that is taking place this week as reported by The New York Times. The families all have a child with Autism which they feel was caused by Thimerosal, a mercury preservative that was used in many vaccines and can still be found in some flu vaccines. Thimerosal was removed from routine vaccinations in 2001. However if there is in fact a link, the damage is already done as the rate of Autism increased from an estimated 1 in 2500 children in 1988 to 1 in 160 children today.
These hearings follow a recent ruling by a Georgia Court in favor of a girl, Hannah Polling who, having an underlying mitochondrial disorder that put her at increased risk, developed autism after receiving her routine vaccinations.
