One of my favorite environmental blogs TreeHugger.com offers the following steps for “How to Green Your Baby“.
- Use Eco-Friendly Diapers - I personally recommend gDiapers or Nature Babycare as discussed on my product page. Both are environmentally friendly alternatives to the traditional diaper which takes up to 500 years to decompose. Nature Babycare diapers are made from corn and are 100% biodegradable. gDiapers have a cloth outer cover and a padded insert that can be flushed down the toilet.
- Breastfeed Your Baby!
- Make Your Own Organic Baby Food
- Use Organic Baby Care Products - My favorite is California Baby…this and other recommendations can be found on my product page.
- Buy Organic Cotton or Hemp Baby Clothing (toxin free!) or Buy Consignment (babies outgrow their clothes quickly)
- Use Non-Toxic Laundry Products - Seventh Generation is a good option or make your own using baking soda and vinegar
- Buy Toys Wisely - avoid plastic toys and buy old fashioned wooden toys. I love European Toy Companies like Haba which can be found at Oompa Toys!
- Buy Furniture Wisely - buy second hand or buy new furniture made from renewable non-toxic materials (Ikea is a great option!)
- Limit Exposure to Toxic Cleaners, Paints and New Carpet! - before painting the baby nursery read my post on Volatile Organic Compounds in paint
- Use Alternative Baby Wipes - avoid parabens & propylene glycol. I like Seventh Generation Baby Wipes and Nature Babycare Baby Wipes. Both can be ordered through Diapers.com (enter code “Tela” for a $5 discount!)
