A Georgia Court ruled in favor of a 9 year old girl, Hannah Poling, who developed autism like symptoms after receiving a round of vaccines. CNN covers the story in more detail in their article “Case Renews Debate on Vaccine-Autism Link”. The girl had an underlying mitochondrial disorder that contributed to her reaction to the five vaccinations she received in one day. The government is not conceding that there is a link between vaccines and autism but the case still raises the question: is the current childhood immunization schedule safe? I have researched and addressed the issue of vaccines and developmental disorders in a previous post and as a result, have decided to follow an alternative vaccination schedule to limit exposure to various chemicals used as preservatives in vaccines for my 2 daughters.
The best thing that can come out of this Georgia Court ruling on vaccines and autism is that the government will support additional research on the safety of childhood vaccinations. At the very least it will raise the issue among parents who have the power to affect change and advocate healthy immunizations for their own children.
