WebMd just reported on a study that Americans are spending 25% less time outdoors than they did in 1987. They attribute this decline to the electronic age and “videophilia”…that people are choosing to spend their time in front of the TV, Computer or play video games, rather than outside in nature. This is especially concerning for children who need sunshine to grow and stay healthy (ever read “Flowers in the Attic” by V.C. Andrews?) and to instill an appreciation for nature and the need for conservation. I remember reading that the average child spends less than 1 hour per WEEK outside playing. That is astounding to me! I lived outside growing up as a child – climbed trees, played in streams, biked, caught fireflies, played flashlight tag and other outdoor games; you name it! Now granted, I think the world overall was a safer place 20+ years ago and schools are placing less and less emphasis on outdoors recess and more focus on computers and academics, but it still doesn’t stop my daughter from playing outdoors daily. There are also a lot of activities to do as a family like hiking, camping, walking, picnic, playground, biking, etc… For more ideas on how to get outside, visit FamilyFun.com
