The Environmental Protection Agency has a list of changes you can make at home to help reduce your impact on the environment and live green. You can sign up to receive their Go Green Newsletter and see the comprehensive list on the EPA website. Below are a few of my favorite steps you can take and are good eco-friendly activities to teach your children so they can learn to live more responsibly:
Turn off appliances and lights when you leave the room.
Don’t let the water run while shaving or brushing your teeth.
Learn how to plant trees, build a pond, compost, and more from the Department of Agriculture’s Natural Resources Conservation Service (www.nrcs.usda.gov/feature/backyard).
Reduce/Reuse/Recycle
- Buy products with less packaging or made from recycled materials.
- Buy products that use less toxic chemicals.
- Use cloth napkins or towels.
- Donate extras to people you know or to charity instead of throwing them away.
- Recycle paper (printer paper, newspapers, mail, etc.), plastic, glass bottles, cardboard, and aluminum cans. If your community doesn’t collect at the curb, take them to a collection center.
I encourage everyone to choose one activity from the EPA’s list and incorporate it into your daily routine. If we all start taking small steps now, it can result in a giant leap towards Environmental Protection! Please feel free to share other ways in which you and your family live green by leaving a comment.
