NPR interviews investigative journalist Mark Schapiro on his book “Exposed: The Toxic Chemistry of Everyday Products and What’s at Stake for American Power”. In his book, Schapiro discusses the rampant use of toxins in plastics, toys, cosmetics, and other everyday products which can cause genetic damage, cancer and birth defects. The European Union has banned the use of toxic chemicals such as phthalates which are used to soften plastics. The European Union also has much stricter consumer safety standards and by revamping the way companies can make safe products and still make money, they are the global leaders in a fast growing green market. However, many of the toxic products are still being developed and sold in the United States, despite growing evidence that they are harmful to adults and children alike. This is of real concern and it is only until we start voicing our opinions as Americans that changes will be made.
